About
I have 14 years of mainstream school and sixth form college teaching experience and have worked as a tutor for over seven years. After my PGCE teaching qualification from The University of Warwick, I taught for two years in a comprehensive school, where I became Head of French and taught French and German to GCSE and A level with students from Years 7 to 13. I then spent 12 years teaching French and German to A level at The Sixth Form College in Solihull and worked as Head of German for seven years. During this time I have supported hundreds of students through challenging exams, and mentored trainee teachers.
I genuinely love working with individuals from different backgrounds and countries, helping them improve their language skills, confidence in speaking, understanding and accurately using grammar in writing. I offer tuition in French and German, but also enjoy supporting students learning English as a foreign language, preparing them for exams such as IELTS.
Maybe you are looking for a tutor to help your son or daughter get ready for GCSE or A level. Perhaps they have found year 10 or year 12 challenging and need some extra help over the summer, or will need some intensive preparation just before the exams. This is my speciality.
My tutoring style is based on encouragement and praise to create a positive learning environment. I like to gain a good understanding of the preferred learning style of each student, in order to adapt my lessons to match the abilities of each individual, or to focus in on any particular exam challenge a student is facing.
My job satisfaction comes from receiving feedback like this from a year 13 student this summer: "I have really enjoyed our lessons and will miss them. You've helped ignite my passion for languages after a year of not feeling very confident with my German."

My son has just completed his GCSE German and awaiting exam results. He could not have done it without the support and tuition from Anne. She has been an excellent source of learning, guidance and dedication, with flexibility and patience. His command of the language has increased several folds, and he went into the exam room with much more confidence and ability- what a difference it has made in only a few months! Anne Marie is a lovely lady, who is friendly and personable and professional. From our first contact she was really quick to respond and her knowledge of the German A-Level exam boards and her willingness to tailor her tutoring to the specific needs of my daughter was very reassuring. She has already helped my daughter understand some important grammar concepts that she has struggled with for months, so this is a fantastic start. My daughter already feels more confident in her German studies and she looks forward to her weekly lessons. We would definitely recommend Anne Marie as a German A Level tutor.

I have used First Tutors several times before but have to say that Anne Marie is by far, the best choice we have made. It is an absolute pleasure to highly recommend her. We were looking for a French tutor for our 15 year old son. He achieved a grade 4 in his mock exam and we wanted to get him in the best possible position to get a GCSE grade 6 in less than 6 months - so a big ask! Anne Marie is highly experienced and qualified but hugely personable, approachable and flexible. She also meticulously plans lessons and sends activities to be completed in advance. She has a lovely calm, positive and encouraging approach to bring out the best. I have watched my son’s confidence and ability grow and each week he has looked forward to his tuition, often quoting how his it has helped him. He is now on track to achieving a grade 8 with Anne Marie’s expert tuition. A heartfelt thank you from us all.

Having recently retired I decided to take the opportunity to improve my French, which I had neglected since my poor showing at GCE, many years ago. I was interested in the mechanics of the language and not just conversation. Anne Marie is very approachable and from the start I was impressed by how professional she is and how quickly she was able to assess my son's strengths and weaknesses. She has been able to provide invaluable support to my son in preparation for his trial German oral exam and has also provided helpful practical tips. My son's trial oral exam went well and I'm sure the real oral exam will also go well thanks to Anne Marie.
