About

About Me

I am an experienced Classics teacher and specialist private tutor, offering individually tailored tuition in Latin, Classical Greek and preparation for the 11+ and independent school entrance examinations.

I have over 20 years' teaching experience in leading independent and state schools, alongside more than 15 years as a private tutor. I currently hold the positions of Head of Latin at a leading preparatory school.

I hold a First-Class Honours degree from Durham University and a PGCE in Classics from the University of Cambridge.

Specialist Examination & Scholarship Preparation

I have extensive experience preparing pupils for a wide range of examinations, including Common Entrance, academic scholarships, GCSE, A Level and the International Baccalaureate.

I understand the expectations of academically selective independent schools and the importance of preparing pupils not simply to pass examinations, but to demonstrate genuine understanding and intellectual confidence.

My tuition includes:

  • Latin: Common Entrance (Levels 1–3 and CASE), scholarship examinations, GCSE, A Level and IB.

  • Classical Greek: Beginners, Common Entrance (Levels 1–2), GCSE and more advanced study by arrangement.

  • 11+ and independent school entrance examinations: English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, including the Kent 11+ and ISEB Pre-Test.

  • Targeted examination preparation: Revision, past-paper practice, examination technique and support with challenging areas of the syllabus.

I also welcome pupils who are not working towards a particular examination, whether they need additional help alongside school lessons, wish to consolidate their understanding, are studying independently or simply have an interest in learning a Classical language.

My Approach to Tuition

Every pupil brings different strengths, challenges, ambitions and ways of learning. My approach is therefore highly personalised, combining academic rigour with patience, encouragement and carefully structured teaching.

I place particular emphasis on identifying gaps in understanding, building secure foundations and developing independent thinking. For examination candidates, this includes working systematically towards the demands of their particular syllabus or target school, while helping them approach unfamiliar questions with greater confidence.

What You Can Expect

My tuition offers a level of individual attention and continuity that can be difficult to achieve in a busy classroom.

Lessons are carefully planned around each pupil's needs and supported by:

  • A personalised Scheme of Work, recording topics covered, individual strengths and areas for further development.

  • Carefully selected or individually prepared teaching resources.

  • Clear explanations, structured practice and targeted revision.

  • Appropriate homework, reviewed and discussed during lessons.

  • Regular, constructive feedback to parents on progress and next steps.

For pupils preparing for particularly demanding examinations or scholarships, I also offer an enhanced tuition arrangement with priority booking and additional support between lessons.

Building Confidence and Enjoyment

Although I have considerable experience supporting pupils with ambitious academic goals, I am equally committed to helping those who find a subject difficult, have lost confidence or simply need a little extra encouragement.

Some of my most rewarding teaching experiences have involved helping pupils who initially felt overwhelmed by Latin or Greek to discover that they could not only understand the subject, but genuinely enjoy it.

I believe that academic progress and enjoyment should go hand in hand. My teaching is supportive, thorough and appropriately challenging, with each pupil encouraged to achieve their own potential.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Elizabeth helped my daughter go from a D to an A in Latin in the space of six months, with a single weekly lesson. She identified knowledge gaps and structured lessons to fill these and provide a solid basis before progressing further. Elizabeth is a very competent and inspiring teacher. She is kind and caring, and bonds well with children. She even sent a little gift out (after asking my permission) as a reward for great effort and milestones reached. I recommend Elizabeth without hesitation.

Elizabeth is a wonderful tutor to my daughter. She is incredibly organised, and a skilled communicator. Every lesson has a focus and a goal and the detailed feedback straight after the session keeps my daughter on track and engaged. My daughter likes Elizabeth very much and is more hopeful about her Latin than before.

We cannot recommend Elizabeth highly enough. She taught my daughter Latin from scratch and this summer my daughter achieved a level 9 at GCSE. Elizabeth is a committed, professional, diligent tutor. After every lesson she emails comprehensive lesson summaries and is always quick to respond to queries between tutor sessions. Her enjoyment of the subject is infectious - my daughter says "Elizabeth's lessons were fun and she is really motivational". Do not hesitate to choose Elizabeth if you are looking for a tutor - she is the best in the area, so much so, we were happy to make a 70 km round trip to her tutor sessions.

Excellent tutor. My son has struggled with Latin and Elizabeth has really helped him gain those extra marks with exams and also with his confidence with the subject.

Elizabeth is an absolutely first class Latin teacher and we would whole heartedly recommend her. Our son attended lessons with Elizabeth to prepare him for his Latin GCSE. Elizabeth had only a matter of months with our son and turned a C/D mock result into an A* GCSE. She is a diligent, very well organised and thoughtful, caring teacher. We were very lucky to have found her!

Elizabeth was a fantastic tutor for my eldest son for his GCSE Latin! Her sessions were incredibly well prepared and organised and Harry thrived with her support. She gave him a great deal of confidence for his exams and I'm sure was the reason he gained his top mark! Many thanks

Elizabeth is incredibly professional to deal with, sending detailed notes on getting to her house (including a photo of a tricky section!) reminder emails close to the event and a request for what my son's goals and current texts were. Her manner with children is lovely, very caring and knowledgeable. My son is happy and learning quickly it appears. And I am happy to recommend.

My son and I are truly delighted to have found Elizabeth. My son has had 5 sessions covering Latin language and literature in preparation for GCSE examinations, and in this short time Elizabeth has renewed his enthusiasm and confidence. Elizabeth is professional, efficient, warm and altogether in our opinion a most excellent tutor. We will continue with lessons until the examination dates. We have no hesitation in recommending her.
