About
I am an experienced A Level Sociology teacher, former Head of Sociology and AQA examiner, with 20 years’ teaching experience. I have taught Sociology in both secondary and grammar schools and hold a PhD in Sociology. I now specialise in private tuition, helping students strengthen their subject knowledge, improve their essay writing and perform more confidently in examinations.
My tuition is focused, supportive and carefully tailored to the individual student. Some students come to me because they are struggling with particular theories or topics; others understand the course well but need help turning that knowledge into high-level examination answers. I work with students to identify exactly where they are losing marks and give them clear, practical ways to improve.
For A Level students, I place particular emphasis on the exam specification, assessment objectives and mark schemes. As an AQA examiner, I understand what examiners are looking for and can help students develop the analysis, evaluation, application and essay structure needed for the higher mark bands. I have extensive experience of preparing students for examinations, with many going on to achieve A and A* grades.
I also have considerable experience working with students with additional educational needs, including dyslexia, ADHD and autism. My approach is patient, clear and structured. Difficult material is broken into manageable stages without lowering expectations, and students are given methods they can use independently and confidently.
Alongside A Level tuition, I work with undergraduate students who need support with essay planning, dissertation structure and academic writing. My PhD and academic research experience enables me to offer informed academic support at university level.
Above all, I want students to understand Sociology rather than simply memorise it – and to know how to turn that understanding into clear, well-supported and effective writing.

Karen has been extremely helpful with our daughter who is currently studying A Level sociology . She is patient and understanding to her needs . She also understands her difficulties in processing as she is autistic and accommodates the lesson accordingly. So far she is achieving above where she was before , our daughter is happy with the progress she is making . Karen is also flexible with the sessions and accommodating when we need to change at the last minute . I would definitely recommend her to others .
