About
My name is Sue. I'm a highly qualified, primary school teacher with over 16 years of experience working in UK schools and a successful track record of delivering tuition in English and maths. I have a wealth of strategies that promote accelerated progress and am deeply committed to my students' success. Proactive and positive, I tailor my tuition sessions to meet pupils’ individual needs, empowering them to build on their confidence at every turn.
I have successfully prepared learners for entrance to Dulwich College, Alleyn's, Dulwich Prep, Whitgift, St. Dunstan's, JAGS and more. I offer weekly, online or in-person tuition and am based in Lewisham.
As an English graduate, I have a particular passion for teaching reading and writing. I use a variety of rich texts and engaging prompts, including short films, as a springboard for generating different types of writing. As a practitioner, I am interested in developing the breadth and depth of children's vocabulary and I enjoy teaching pupils to construct varied and ambitious sentence structures that engage the reader.
When teaching maths, I use the Singapore maths method - underpinned by the NCETM and White Rose schemes - to support and challenge pupils, enabling them to deepen their conceptual understanding of complex topics through concrete and pictorial resources. By spacing the learning and regularly revisiting topics, I ensure that the taught content is embedded into a student's long-term memory. I enjoy bringing the learning to life - for example, using Lego pieces to teach fractions.
I obtained a double ‘distinction’ in my PGCE (Sheffield Hallam) and was awarded ‘outstanding’ teacher status by my training provider (LETTA). Reflective and thoughtful, I adapt my delivery to suit each individual child and I employ a wide variety of scaffolds to support students with SEND (autism, dyspraxia and dyslexia) and EAL.
