About

I am a fully qualified English teacher and full-time private tutor, specialising in GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature, A-level English Literature and A-level English Language. I also teach KS2 and 3 and the 11/13+ entrance examinations.

I have also worked as an examiner for AQA for ten years, which gives me a very clear understanding of how exam responses are assessed and what students need to do to move securely through the mark bands.

Before teaching, I spent fifteen years working as a criminal defence Barrister. That background has shaped the way I teach: I am very used to close reading, precise argument, careful use of evidence and explaining complex ideas clearly. These are exactly the skills students need when they are trying to move from vague or general responses into sharper, higher-mark analysis.

Having decided to leave my legal career of 15 years, I re-qualified and began teaching English in 2014, first in a state school in West London and later at an independent girls’ school in Buckinghamshire, where I spent the final six years of my classroom teaching career. I now dedicate all of my time to private tutoring, working closely with students who need clear, focused and highly personalised support.

My tutoring is always tailored to the individual student. Some pupils need help building confidence; others need a stronger grasp of essay structure, quotation analysis, exam timing, unseen texts, or how to move from a mid-level answer into the top bands. I adapt lessons carefully so that each student understands not only what to write, but why it works.

I teach most major exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE. While each board has its own style and wording, the core principles remain very similar: students must respond clearly to the question, use evidence precisely, analyse writers’ methods, understand context where relevant, and shape their answers according to the mark scheme. My aim is to make those expectations feel manageable rather than mysterious.

I also have extensive experience supporting students with learning differences and processing difficulties. I work patiently and practically, breaking tasks down into clear stages without lowering expectations. Many students who struggle with English do not lack ability; they simply need the exam process made more explicit, structured and repeatable.

My lessons are focused, supportive and honest. I do not believe in vague encouragement or generic feedback. My encouragement is genuine and my feedback is specific. Students are shown exactly what they are doing well, exactly where marks are being lost, and exactly how to improve their written responses. Whether a student is aiming to secure a pass, build confidence, or push towards the highest grades, the teaching is built around their needs, their course and their exam board.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

My daughter said he explains material very clearly as well as share useful resources and encourages actual interest and exploration into the subject. She was able to raise her score from a predicted 7 to a 9 after working with him.

Jason was my son’s IGCSE English tutor for about six months and honestly one of the best we’ve had. He reignited his interest in the subject, which had been dormant for years. He was great at listening and understanding his confidence gaps and helped him immensely. As a parent, I appreciated his availability to answer questions and provide valuable feedback. He never wasted our time or lessons and was considerate if we needed to cancel or change plans. Every lesson was conducted professionally with humour and a genuine passion for teaching and helping.

    Jason replied

Thank you so much, Aza, it was a delight working with your son. He is a genuinely talented young man, with a real passion for literature and all the ideas and emotions that it engenders.

Jason is an outstanding teacher who truly puts the welfare of his students at the heart of everything he does. He has been preparing my son for his upcoming 13+ scholarship exams, and the progress has been remarkable. Jason has a rare ability to explain complex concepts—whether it’s analyzing challenging poems or tackling advanced comprehension texts—in a way that is both clear and engaging. What stands out most is the time and care he invests beyond the sessions. He provides detailed feedback and practical strategies for improvement, ensuring my son continues to grow even outside of lesson hours. This level of dedication shows that Jason’s priority is always the success and confidence of his students, not financial gain. Thanks to his guidance, my son has made significant improvements and is now firmly on track for his scholarship exams at a leading independent school. Jason’s expertise, encouragement, and genuine care have made a huge difference, and we are deeply grateful for his support.

Jason responded quickly to our request and has been very accommodating in addressing all our concerns and flexing to the different needs of our two children. He set up an introductory session from the outset which was highly successful in building a positive and fun relationship. Despite having two reluctant readers both my sons look forward to their session with Jason.

Jason has been tutoring my children since last year, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the support he has provided. He has been helping my daughter with her GCSEs, guiding her through how to answer questions effectively, understand different types of writing, and prepare not just to pass, but to achieve the highest marks possible. Thanks to Jason, my daughter has grown significantly in confidence and has felt incredibly supported throughout the year. He has even helped her develop genuine enthusiasm for the subject. Jason has also been working with my son, who is currently in Year 9. Under Jason’s guidance, he has progressed from ‘developing’ to achieving upper ‘good’ results in his exams. His confidence has improved dramatically, and Jason has had a real impact on his academic growth. Jason is a fantastic tutor, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and truly dedicated. We feel very lucky to have found him. If you are looking for a tutor for your children, I recommend him, he is amazing.

Jason has been tutoring our son for Edexcel GCSE English for 3 months and we are full of gratitude for his support. He very quickly got to know Oliver, building rapport and mutual respect in the first session. This gave our son absolute trust in Jason from the start. Jason has been clear to plan sessions and set expectations really well throughout and has kept me in the loop if I haven't been able to be present. I have really appreciated these updates. Oliver described the sessions as just what he needed, he said the analysis techniques were really helpful, that Jason was friendly and approachable and gave him the perfect amount of challenge to allow him to develop his skills. Early on, Jason picked up that Oliver was lacking in confidence affecting his time management and ability to get started in exams. His skilled tuition, guidance and mentoring empowered Oliver to approach his work with far greater confidence, technique and skills than he had before. He said that much of what he did in sessions, he was able to directly apply in his exams. Jason has also taken time to ask for feedback throughout, to send words of encouragement to Oliver and express interest in how he was doing in exams. This tutoring experience with Jason has far exceeded our hopes and expectations. Thank you so much!

    Jason replied

Thank you so much Helen. It was wonderful working with such a bright and engaged student. Seeing Ollie’s confidence grow was amazingly rewarding. I looked forward to our sessions very much and I’m certain that Ollie will be a great success in his future endeavours.

He took the time to understand our son and some of the difficulties he has faced (dyslexia) and provided thoughtful and empathetic solutions to help our son achieve his best. Our son enjoyed the sessions and found Jason’s friendly approach very helpful. Jason’s communication was excellent and he always responded quickly to any queries we had. Very happy and would not hesitate to recommend. Thank you Jason.

I want to thank Jason for the amazing help he gave me with my GCSE English Language. Before starting with Jason, I did very badly in the mock exam and felt very discouraged. I didn't even know how to write the answers or get the marks in the exam. Jason specifically explained to me about the exam structure and made it clear how good scores can be achieved. The goal was always clear, and Jason’s guidance helped me understand what was expected. Jason taught me some important language techniques to remember and also referred to techniques I didn't need to focus on, which was very helpful. We worked together to check and improve my answers, which greatly boosted my confidence. After a few months of lessons, my skills improved a lot. Jason was always very clear, patient, and supportive, which made a big difference for me. I could see my progress and felt more prepared for the exam. I truly appreciate all your support and dedication, Jason. I don’t know what I would have done without your tremendous support. Thank you so much for everything.

Very happy to recommend Jason. He helped our son with an academic turnaround in English: today we got his results and his grades had increased two levels from his mock results. There really isn’t any better evidence of the input and support Jason provided than this. On top of that, his style of teaching and the relationship he built made the lessons easy and fun. All round superb.

    Jason replied

Thank you so much Mark – it was a pleasure working with your son and I’m so glad that he managed to achieve such positive results in such a short space of time.
