Business Studies is offered at GCSE and A-level (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Cambridge Technical and BTEC routes) and covers marketing, finance, operations, HR and strategy. It's more applied than Economics and rewards case-study fluency: the exam papers are built around extended business scenarios. Tutoring helps most with the case-study analysis (where students are asked to evaluate strategic options under uncertainty) and with the quantitative content at A-level (break-even, ratios, investment appraisal), which catches out students who chose Business as the 'maths-light' option. Look for tutors with both teaching experience and some real business background.
GCSE business is assessed largely through case studies, so students read an unseen scenario about a firm and apply what they know to it. Definitions are the starting point, and applying them to the case is where most of the lost marks sit. Quantitative skills appear throughout, covering break-even, cash flow and profit margin calculations, and they are usually the part students are least prepared for. The subject rewards answers that stay anchored to the business in the case rather than drifting into general theory. Tutoring tends to focus on applying knowledge to an unfamiliar firm under time pressure, and on the longer evaluation questions where a judgement has to be justified rather than stated.
GCSEs are sat in Year 11 (age 15-16), with most students taking 8-10 subjects. They're the main UK school qualification at 16: the 9-1 graded exams that drive sixth-form admission, apprenticeship eligibility, and (via maths and English at grade 4 or 5) university and many job prerequisites. Tutoring demand peaks here. The biggest grade gains tend to come from exam-paper technique rather than further content. Students often know more than they show. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, WJEC, CIE) diverge on content and assessment, so tutor familiarity with the specific spec is meaningful in most subjects.
