Economics is offered at GCSE (less commonly) and A-level (AQA, Edexcel, OCR), and splits into microeconomics (markets, firms, market failure) and macroeconomics (growth, inflation, unemployment, policy). It's essay-and-data-heavy at A-level: students need to apply theory to current real-world events and write to mark schemes that reward structured argument with diagrams. Tutoring helps most with diagram technique (which is rewarded explicitly), with essay structure under timed conditions, and with the macro paper, which lags news and rewards students who follow the FT or equivalent. For Oxbridge or LSE applicants, look for tutors who go beyond the spec.
GCSE economics is offered by far fewer schools than the A-level, so most students meet the subject for the first time at sixth form. Those who do take it at GCSE cover the same two halves, microeconomics and macroeconomics, at a level that leans more on describing mechanisms than evaluating them. Quantitative skills carry a defined weighting and cover index numbers, percentage change and reading data from charts. The most common difficulty is the chain of reasoning: questions ask what happens to price when supply shifts and expect each link stated rather than the conclusion asserted. Students moving on to the A-level generally find the transition easier than classmates starting fresh, though the evaluation demand still steps up sharply.
GCSEs are sat in Year 11 (age 15-16), with most students taking 8-10 subjects. They're the load-bearing UK school qualification: the 9-1 graded exams that drive sixth-form admission, apprenticeship eligibility, and (via maths and English at grade 4 or 5) university and many job prerequisites. Tutoring demand peaks here. The biggest grade gains tend to come from exam-paper technique rather than further content. Students often know more than they show. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, WJEC, CIE) diverge on content and assessment, so tutor familiarity with the specific spec is meaningful in most subjects.
