Further Maths is taken alongside A-level Maths and is effectively a separate subject: Core Pure plus optional modules in Mechanics, Statistics, Decision, Further Pure or Numerical Methods, depending on board. It's expected for competitive maths, physics, engineering and economics applications, and required for STEP-track Cambridge entries. Tutoring earns its keep on Core Pure (matrices, complex numbers, polar curves, hyperbolic functions) and on whichever optional papers a school can't staff well. Edexcel, AQA, OCR and OCR MEI structure the optional papers differently. Match the tutor to the spec, not just the title.
A-level Further Maths is taken alongside A-level Maths, not instead of it, so students sit two qualifications and roughly double the pure content. Core pure runs through complex numbers, matrices and hyperbolic functions; the optional units vary by school and by board, which is why two students "doing Further Maths" can be studying noticeably different courses. Worth checking which options a tutor has actually taught before booking. It is a common requirement for maths, engineering and physics degrees at selective universities, and it is also the usual preparation route for MAT and STEP. Students most often want help with the optional units, where school teaching time is thinnest.
A-levels are sat at the end of Year 13 (age 17-18) and are the standard UK university-entrance qualification, with most students taking 3 subjects (sometimes 4 plus an EPQ). Grades A*-E feed UCAS, and competitive university courses set offers at AAA or higher. Tutoring helps most with the step up from GCSE: A-levels demand independent learning, denser content, and exam technique that rewards structured argument or method-mark-aware working. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, CIE) diverge meaningfully, so match the tutor to the spec, especially in maths, sciences and modern languages where assessment differences are sharp.
