Science at primary and KS3 level is the foundation that GCSE Combined or Triple builds on: working scientifically, the basics of forces, particles, cells, reactions and ecosystems. At this stage tutoring mostly builds confidence with practical thinking and graph-reading, along with the vocabulary that exam-board mark schemes will later reward. For KS3 students heading into Year 10, a few sessions on independent/dependent variables, units, and scientific writing pay off across all three sciences at GCSE. Look for tutors comfortable across biology, chemistry and physics rather than specialists in one.
GCSE science in England is taken one of two ways: combined science, worth two GCSEs reported as a pair of grades, or biology, chemistry and physics as three separate GCSEs. In 2024/25, 23 per cent of pupils in state-funded schools took the separate sciences. Both routes are tiered, and a student sits every paper at Foundation or Higher; Foundation tops out at 5-5 in combined science and grade 5 in each separate science. Practical work is examined in the written papers, where at least 15 per cent of the marks test it, built on at least 16 required practicals in combined science or eight in each separate science. Physics and combined science papers come with an equation sheet for the life of the current specifications; biology and chemistry do not.
GCSEs are sat in Year 11 (age 15-16), with most students taking 8-10 subjects. They're the main UK school qualification at 16: the 9-1 graded exams that drive sixth-form admission, apprenticeship eligibility, and (via maths and English at grade 4 or 5) university and many job prerequisites. Tutoring demand peaks here. The biggest grade gains tend to come from exam-paper technique rather than further content. Students often know more than they show. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, WJEC, CIE) diverge on content and assessment, so tutor familiarity with the specific spec is meaningful in most subjects.
