About

Hi, my name is Andrew and I’m a fully qualified experienced senior practicing teacher with 19 years experience in teaching, and 16 years experience as a tutor. I’ve been an examiner since 2009 and worked for Ofqual as a subject expert for a number of years. I also have extensive SEN experience, and understand SEN, being dyslexic and having an adult ADHD diagnosis myself.

My broad experience in life, teaching and examining allows me to quickly identify where students need the most assistance, helping them to build the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to succeed.

I strive to be approachable and reassuring in order to create an atmosphere where my students feel comfortable sharing their challenges, and ensuring they know I’m there to help.

My specialism is offering subject knowledge enhancement and exam skills including more focused tutoring for those crucial moments like exams, assessments and coursework however I also offer long-term, general tutoring for students who need broader support throughout the school year.

Helping students gain a better understanding and connection to their subject is very rewarding and I’m proud that my tutees report a 2-grade improvement on average with 80% achieving an A* or the grade they were looking for.

Here are a few key facts about me:

- recent 6th Form school teacher (PT);

- specialise in teaching & learning and exam & study skills, essay marking service and quality assurance, course revision, SEN specialist;

- specialise in common student problems such as: feeling lost / confusion; loss of enthusiasm; difficulties with understanding concepts; challenges with existing teacher; issues writing essays; problems with exams; wanting to get an edge / improve / excellence;

- I provide added value and am proactive e.g. I have an open door communication policy, I am always thinking about how I can help further and I send extra curriculum material after most sessions to consolidate and expand your learning as necessary;

- home schooling and private candidate support.

Reviews from First Tutors

Imported from Andrew Y.'s First Tutors profile before the site went dark. Shown separately from Tutorperch reviews — today they don't feed this tutor's Tutorperch rating or ranking.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

    Andrew is an outstanding tutor. We engaged him in the run up to my son's A-Levels initially for Politics and subsequently RS - and he has been absolutely transformative. Andrew was able to immediately identify the main areas of weakness and has expertly guided my son on how to (entirely!) re-structure his essays and his marks have soared. He has been great in rebuilding my son's confidence - which was low after his mocks - and the very specific and targeted feedback on all the essays that my son sends him has been invaluable. My son is frankly in awe of Andrew's encyclopaedic knowledge in both subjects and has greatly enjoyed their discussions in their sessions together. We only wish we had found Andrew sooner!

    Andrew Y. replied

    Thanks very much Liz, that's really lovely to hear and I'm very happy with your son's efforts, he is responding so well!

    My daughter has had three sessions with Andrew and already feels much more confident about her impending exam. Andrew has shown her time efficient ways to revise, gone through content and essay structure. She is now producing top level essays. Andrew is critical but in a kind and encouraging way.

    Andrew Y. replied

    Thanks Nicola, that's very kind

    Andrew is currently providing my son with iGCSE's RS tutoring. Our son enjoys his lessons with Andrew very much, and in a very short space of time has gone up two grades in his recent Mock exams (potentially heading for a high 8 or 9 in the final exams. We are so happy with the results to date that we have now also asked Andrew to help with History iGCSE preparation, and have every confidence that Andrew will work his magic in both subjects. He is an excellent tutor, would highly recommend.

    Andrew has been an excellent tutor for my daughter in preparation for her RS A level. She enjoyed his sessions hugely; being dyslexic he was able to guide her through, exactly what was required in essay content and structure. He went through each subject area she did not fully understand in a clear and succinct way and she found him both motivating and engaging. His essay feedback was prompt with clear instructions on how to improve and additional items to add. I would highly recommend Andrew to other parents.

    Andrew Y. replied

    Thanks, Catherine, all the best for the future!
