About

My career spans over 50 years of international teaching and professional performance both as a jazz and classical musician. During this time I have performed with many leading orchestras throughout Europe,Scandinavia and the Gulf States as well as holding senior teaching positions in music conservatoires, colleges and universities. I am now retired from professional teaching but continue to offer a small amount of private tuition to those who have a genuine desire to learn.

I am also a published author in the field of music education/musical intelligence/music ability and this informs my approach to music tuition through a deep understanding of the core skills that are essential for learning any musical instrument.

Success in learning to play a musical instrument properly involves much more than simply knowing what keys to press or how to blow etc. Too many music teachers concern themselves with the simple mechanics of playing without understanding and developing a fundamental grasp of the core musical skills necessary to succeed. As an experienced Dalcroze practitioner, I have successfully helped countless students to develop and master these fundamental core skills through the use of Eurhythmics as well as other established music pedagogies.

I adapt my approach to tuition according to differing learning styles. It can be more casual for those who are just learning for fun or more structured and demanding for those wishing to take exams or college entrance exams. Many of my past students have gone on to study music and forge careers as professional musicians and music teachers while others continue to enrich their lives through playing just for fun with amateur groups and ensembles. While I encourage all my students to take graded examinations it is not compulsory and they are free to progress at their own pace.

I offer tuition to all ages and levels of ability from beginner to advanced and have a proven track record of success in AB and Trinity Guildhall examinations at all levels with over 98% of my pupils gaining passes with merit or distinction. As a Fellow of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) for more than three decades, I provide both face-to-face and online lessons aligned fully with ISM guidelines and am now registered as a retired member in their register of professional musicians in education.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Chris is an excellent saxophone teacher with a wealth of experience gained over more than 50 years. As a complete beginner, I’ve found him extremely patient and clear in his explanations, making learning both approachable and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking to learn the saxophone.

Thank you for your positive feedback, Mark. Very few students take the time to do this and it is nice to know you appreciate my approach and feel you are progressing with your playing.

Full of enthusiasm and very encouraging. Clearly a very knowledgeable and professional teacher who has a real skill in helping you to believe in your own abilities. Maybe most importantly, a thoroughly nice chap
