About

Learning can be fun and it's well-known that children learn better and faster when they feel happy, confident and relaxed. I therefore aim to be friendly and approachable to ensure that children are ready to learn to the best of their ability.

My name is Ruth and I absolutely love teaching, particularly teenagers, who, let’s face it, can sometimes get a bit of a bad press. With over 26 years teaching experience, both abroad and in the UK, I’ve taught English as a 2nd language for many years and worked for The British Council in Thailand, Egypt and Venezuela. I then trained as a Design & Technology teacher by doing a PGCE to gain Qualified Teacher status and taught in Secondary Schools in The UK for over 10 years. I specialise in teaching neurodiverse children, including those with ADHD & ADD, plus those with dyslexia. These children can sometimes struggle in mainstream schooling and often get behind in their work. I can help them to catch up and realise their full potential.

How we verify these

Each imported review went through admin review. The tutor proved ownership of the First Tutors profile via one of two paths:

  • Photo match. The First Tutors avatar matched the tutor's identity-verified Tutorperch photo, confirmed by admin.
  • Cryptographic email check. The tutor uploaded an original First Tutors email (.eml). We verified the DKIM signature against First Tutors' signing keys and cross-checked the embedded tutor ID against the claimed profile.

The review text is the original reviewer's own words, quoted as-is. We verified the tutor's ownership of the profile, not the truth of what each individual reviewer wrote.

Ruth is giving my son, preparing for his GCSE English, faith in himself and his ability in English. She brings a range of great materials & is a warm and supportive tutor. My son’s teacher at school commented on his improvement after Ruth’s tutoring and my son is even considering English a level which hadn’t interested him previously.

    Ruth D. replied

Thanks very much indeed. I really enjoy tutoring your son!

Ruth has been tutoring my daughter for over a year. She has built her confidence and importantly, developed a connection to my daughter. My child enjoys seeing Ruth and has definitely benefited from tuition. I can recommend Ruth for A level English and also for children who may be dyslexic or have other needs.

    Ruth D. replied

Many thanks for your very kind words Dean

The support Ruth has given my son has been excellent. He's in the middle of his GCSEs and his feedback is 'Ruth is so easy to talk to and has really helped me with my confidence. She is kind and friendly too'. Thank you Ruth!

    Ruth D. replied

Many thanks for your feedback Lucy. It has been a pleasure teaching your son and I’m really happy to hear that it has helped.

Ruth is very approachable, friendly and patient. She has only been tutoring our grandson for a few weeks (one hour a week) but I have great hopes as her techniques are having a positive affect!!

    Ruth D. replied

Thanks very much indeed Clare. I’m so glad to be helping!

Ruth gave weekly GCSE English tuition for my daughter who has previously missed most of high school. Ruth is a very experienced teacher and really knows her stuff. She was able to give my daughter very specific and detailed guidance, not only on how to understand and intepret the English language, but also on how to answer the exam questions correctly and how to allocate the right amount of time to each section. I would recommed Ruth as a tutor without hesitation.

    Ruth D. replied

Many thanks for your feedback Jane. It was a real pleasure teaching Josie & I wish her all the best for her future

Ruth is amazing. She is experienced and knows how to put children at their ease. Since she started my mildly dyslexic son has been nominated for an award in English by his teachers. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

    Ruth D. replied

Thanks very much Louise for your kind words
