GCSE Maths tutors

GCSE maths is tiered, and the tier matters more than most parents expect. Foundation covers grades 1 to 5; Higher covers 4 to 9. Schools enter students for one or the other, so a student sitting Foundation cannot reach a grade 6 however well the paper goes. A good chunk of tutoring at this level starts by working out which tier a student is actually on and whether that is still the right call. There are three papers and the first is sat without a calculator. Ofqual has confirmed a formulae sheet for the 2025 to 2027 exam series, which moves revision away from memorising equations toward recognising which one a question wants. The persistent sticking points are algebraic manipulation and anything phrased as reasoning rather than a procedure to repeat.

GCSEs are sat in Year 11 (age 15-16), with most students taking 8-10 subjects. They're the load-bearing UK school qualification: the 9-1 graded exams that drive sixth-form admission, apprenticeship eligibility, and (via maths and English at grade 4 or 5) university and many job prerequisites. Tutoring demand peaks here. The biggest grade gains tend to come from exam-paper technique rather than further content. Students often know more than they show. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, WJEC, CIE) diverge on content and assessment, so tutor familiarity with the specific spec is meaningful in most subjects.
