Music Theory in UK exam terms means ABRSM Music Theory (dominant). Trinity also offers Theory of Music but it isn't an interchangeable prereq for ABRSM Practical Grades. The ladder runs Grades 1-8, with ABRSM Grade 5 Theory the hard prerequisite to book any ABRSM Practical or Performance Grade 6-8 (Practical Musicianship Grade 5 and Grade 5 Jazz are accepted alternatives). Grades 1-5 are online on-demand via webcam, marked out of 75 (50 pass, 60 merit, 65 distinction), and have been the steady-state format since August 2020. Grades 6-8 remain paper-based on set dates and add score analysis, harmonisation and melodic composition that Grades 1-5 don't test. Tutoring helps most with Grade 5 prep specifically (the prereq binds tightly and creates most theory-tuition demand). Grades 6-8 are a smaller and more specialist teaching pool because harmonisation, figured bass and score analysis are a different skillset. Distinct from GCSE and A-level Music theory components, which test under different boards with different conventions.
