Geography at GCSE and A-level mixes physical (rivers, coasts, glaciation, climate, tectonics), human (urbanisation, development, globalisation, migration) and skills-based content (fieldwork, statistical techniques, GIS, map reading). Tutoring helps most on the case-study volume (students often understand processes but can't recall specific named examples under exam pressure) and on the data-skills paper, which trips up otherwise strong candidates. The NEA fieldwork at A-level is a meaningful coursework component. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas) diverge on case studies and fieldwork requirements, so spec-specific tutoring is genuinely useful.
GCSE geography requires fieldwork in two contrasting environments, usually one physical and one human, and it is assessed in a written paper rather than submitted as coursework. Students answer questions about their own data collection, so a trip they treated as a day out becomes a problem in the exam. That is the single most avoidable source of lost marks. The rest splits between physical topics such as rivers, coasts and hazards, and human topics such as urban change and development. Case studies have to be recalled with specific detail, since named places and figures separate a grade 7 from a grade 5 far more than general understanding does.
GCSEs are sat in Year 11 (age 15-16), with most students taking 8-10 subjects. They're the load-bearing UK school qualification: the 9-1 graded exams that drive sixth-form admission, apprenticeship eligibility, and (via maths and English at grade 4 or 5) university and many job prerequisites. Tutoring demand peaks here. The biggest grade gains tend to come from exam-paper technique rather than further content. Students often know more than they show. Boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, WJEC, CIE) diverge on content and assessment, so tutor familiarity with the specific spec is meaningful in most subjects.
