Primary Education tutoring covers the whole National Curriculum in the early years and primary years. Parents reach for it when they want one classroom-style tutor for reading, writing, maths and the wider primary offer: homework support, SATs confidence, or catching up after a disrupted year. It helps most when the gaps run across several subjects. Look for qualified primary teachers (PGCE Primary, QTS) who know the National Curriculum, the Year 6 SATs, the phonics check, and the now-optional Year 2 assessments some schools still run.
A primary education tutor at key stage 2 covers what a class teacher covers, and the list is wide: alongside English, maths and science, a foreign language is compulsory at key stage 2. Only part of it is tested. The Year 6 national tests cover reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and maths. Writing and science are assessed by the class teacher instead, so good test results can hide weak writing. Year 4 has its own statutory check: 25 timed questions on times tables up to 12. A generalist suits a child whose difficulty crosses subjects, such as slow reading that holds back science and history as much as English. The 2027 tests run from 10 to 13 May; arrangements after that year are under review.
Key Stage 2 covers Years 3 to 6 (ages 7-11), ending with the Year 6 SATs in maths, reading, and grammar/punctuation/spelling (SPaG). It's where most primary-to-secondary academic gaps are formed and where tutoring demand peaks at primary level. Year 6 SATs affect set placement at secondary in many schools, and the reading paper specifically (fast comprehension under time pressure) is where most students lose ground. Tutoring helps most with timed reading practice, with the SPaG technicalities (which are taught explicitly and reward precise terminology), and with the maths reasoning papers. 11+ prep overlaps Year 5 and Year 6.
